Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the electric vehicle arm of Tata Motors, unveiled Punch.ev, which is based on its new ‘pure EV’ architecture ‘acti.ev’. The Mumbai-based carmaker revealed that acti.ev, which the company has positioned as compact vehicle architecture, will also underpin the upcoming Harrier EV, Curvv EV and Sierra EV.

Tata Motors unveils Punch EVThe company mentioned that acti.ev (pronounced as active) stands for Advanced Connected Tech-Intelligent Electric Vehicle and will underpin future products from the TPEM portfolio. According to the company, acti.ev is based on performance, technology, modularity, space and efficiency.

Anand Kulkarni, Chief Products Officer said, “This architecture has been meticulously designed to enable class-leading efficiencies, maximising space, and battery capacity and enhancing the overall driving experience. acti.ev is a global-ready, future-facing pure electric architecture that enables the implementation of software-oriented features, ensuring that our vehicles are not only technologically advanced but also future-proof.”

    Bookings:
Starting on January 5, customers can book their Punch.ev at a token amount of Rs 21,000. The price range of Punch.ev will be revealed on the launch day later this month.

“The Punch.ev is our introduction to the next generation of EVs from TPEM. As has been the case with our current portfolio of EV products, we are confident that future products made on the acti.ev architecture will continue to spark delight in our ever growing community,” added Kulkarni.

The electric variant of Punch is unveiled days after Tata Motors launched two EV-exclusive showrooms in Gurugram. The homegrown automaker plans to open new EV showrooms across Tier-I and Tier-II cities in the next 12-18 months.

Meanwhile, the company claims the acti.ev platform features an “optimised battery pack design’ with 10 percent improvement in energy density and offers “multiple range options” from 300 km to 600 km. acti.ev can support a 7.2kW to 11kW onboard charger for AC fast charging and DC fast charging up to 150kW, adding a 100 km range in 10 minutes, according to the company.

The architecture enables modularity in choosing the right drivetrain option for the “appropriate product”, between AWD, RWD, and FWD, as per the company. The platform provides higher computing powers ADAS level 2 capabilities and cloud architecture Arcade.ev, an in-car app suite.

Tata Motors had earlier already announced that it will invest approximately $2 billion in battery-powered vehicles by 2027, while simultaneously bolstering its domestic electric vehicle supply chain by building a battery manufacturing facility in Gujarat. The company is also on course to commence electric cars’ production at the Sanand plant acquired from US carmaker Ford Motor Company.

Another homegrown automaker Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) had also unveiled five new electric SUVs, which are based on its purpose-built Inglo platform, using components from the Volkswagen MEB platform. Positioned under Mahindra’s two EV brands – XUV, and the all-new electric-only brand called BE, the e-SUVs will be priced in the range of Rs. 15-40 lakh.
