Ukraine Agrees to Ceasefire with Russia; Trump Expresses Hope Putin Will Follow Suit
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday welcomed Ukraine’s decision to agree to a ceasefire with Russia, expressing optimism that Moscow would respond positively. Trump’s comments followed Ukraine’s announcement that it was prepared to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Russia after talks with US representatives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.
Trump, deeply concerned by the mounting casualties among soldiers and civilians in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, emphasized the need for an end to the violence. The conflict has been raging for over three years, causing widespread devastation.
“Ukraine has just agreed to a ceasefire, and now it’s time to turn to Russia. I hope President (Vladimir) Putin will agree as well,” Trump said during a press briefing on Tuesday. “Cities are being torn apart, and innocent people are dying. We need to bring this war to a halt.”
He continued, “This is a total ceasefire—Ukraine has agreed, and now we need Russia to do the same. A ceasefire is critical. If we can get Russia on board, that would be a significant step forward.”
Earlier, Ukraine had endorsed a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and expressed willingness to enter immediate negotiations with Russia, marking a potential turning point after more than three years of brutal conflict.
