Incorporated in February 1999, International Gemmological Institute (India) Limited (IGI) is a globally renowned organization specializing in the certification and grading of diamonds, gemstones, and jewellery.
IGI provides independent grading reports that evaluate the characteristics of gemstones, adhering to internationally recognized standards. These reports include detailed assessments of a stone’s colour, cut, clarity, and carat weight.
The organization also offers educational programs and degree courses for professionals in the gem and jewellery industry, alongside a dedicated research department.
With 31 laboratories worldwide, IGI grades a wide range of products, including finished jewellery, natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and gemstones. Additionally, IGI operates 18 gemology schools, graduating thousands of students annually.
The key services offered by IGI include:
- Diamond Grading: Reports on the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat weight) for both natural and lab-grown diamonds, including details on fluorescence and symmetry.
- Coloured Stone Grading: Evaluations of the quality and authenticity of coloured stones like rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, accompanied by detailed grading reports.
- Jewellery Grading: Assessments of diamond and coloured stone quality, craftsmanship, and overall value of finished jewellery.
- Educational Programs: Courses in gemology, diamond grading, jewellery design, and other related subjects.
As of September 30, 2024, IGI operates 31 branches and laboratories across 10 countries, including major markets such as Surat and Mumbai in India, Antwerp, New York, Bangkok, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. The company is supported by a dedicated team of 843 employees, including 316 gemologists, along with professionals in research, education, and certification. Additionally, under its Pre-Acquisition Group, IGI has a network of 20 laboratories and 9 gemology schools.
