Nifty Outlook: RIL-Led Rally Takes Index Above 23,400; Bank Nifty Reclaims 55,000
By Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities
Nifty 50 closed at 23,440.80, gaining 1.68%, as Reliance Industries’ 11.60% surge powered the advance. The near-term outlook remains constructive above 23,200, with the next technical hurdle around 23,490–23,550. Bank Nifty reclaimed 55,000 but needs further momentum confirmation.
Nifty Technical Analysis: Strong Close Supports Recovery
Nifty opened with a gap up and maintained its advance, finishing at the session’s high with a bullish candle. The opening gap remained unfilled, reflecting sustained buying interest during the session.
The index now trades above both its 20-day and 50-day simple moving averages (SMAs). It has also crossed the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level at 23,170, strengthening the recovery structure.
The next technical checkpoint is the 50% Fibonacci retracement near 23,490. Beyond this, the 100-day SMA around 23,680 becomes an important hurdle.
RSI climbed to 61, supporting improving momentum. Market breadth strengthened as the advance-decline ratio improved. However, Reliance’s substantial contribution makes follow-through participation across other heavyweight stocks worth monitoring.
India VIX stood at 15.49. Volatility remains a factor despite the strong close, and an unfilled gap does not guarantee further upside.
Nifty Option Chain: Supportive Positioning, Calls Cluster Above
Nifty Call open interest is concentrated at 23,500, followed by 23,600, identifying nearby areas where the rally may encounter resistance.
The largest Put open interest is at 23,000, followed by 23,200. These positions reinforce the importance of the lower support zone, although open interest alone cannot guarantee that buyers will defend it.
The weekly put-call ratio (PCR) of 1.66 and monthly PCR of 1.27 indicate higher Put open interest relative to Calls in their respective series. This positioning supports the recovery assessment but should be read alongside price action.
Nifty Support and Resistance Levels
| Technical reference | Level |
|---|---|
| Immediate support | 23,200 |
| Lower support | 23,000 |
| First technical hurdle | 23,490–23,500 |
| Immediate resistance | 23,550 |
| Further options hurdle | 23,600 |
| Higher resistance zone | 23,680–23,700 |
A sustained move through 23,490–23,550 would strengthen the case for an extension towards 23,680–23,700. Failure to maintain momentum near this band could lead to consolidation, with 23,200 remaining the first important downside reference.
Bank Nifty Outlook: Recovery Above 55,000 Needs Confirmation
Bank Nifty closed at 55,002.20, up 0.58%, forming a bullish candle with a lower shadow.
Unlike Nifty, the banking index filled its opening gap. It declined to an intraday low of 54,582 before recovering and settling above the psychologically important 55,000 level.
The index also reclaimed its 20-day SMA near 54,950, which had restricted previous advances. The hourly chart’s rebound from lower levels supports the recovery attempt, while the 50-day SMA near 55,800 remains an overhead hurdle.
RSI at 48 suggests that momentum has yet to establish clear bullish strength. The reported positive MACD crossover signals improvement, but a crossover alone does not confirm a broader trend reversal.
Banking performance was mixed: the Nifty PSU Bank index gained 1.36%, while the Nifty Private Bank index declined 0.14%.
Bank Nifty Option Chain: Balanced Positioning at 55,000
Put and Call open interest are nearly equal at 55,000, suggesting an active contest around the closing level.
Call open interest is highest at 56,000, followed by 55,500. Put open interest is highest at 54,000, followed by 54,500.
The PCR of 0.96 indicates broadly balanced positioning, with marginally higher Call open interest. Bank Nifty therefore presents a less decisive derivatives setup than Nifty.
